Hugo is a masterpiece, not just as a kid’s film, but also as a reflection of film as a whole. It recreates that childlike wonder of getting lost in the movie and stays with it the entire movie. It’s a hidden gem.

My Review of Hugo

"A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later."

- Stanley Kubrick

"Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I don’t think I’ve ever gone from admiring a movie so much in the beginning to being frustrated and annoyed by the end. Yet, this is the case for The Tree of Life. It is a beautifully made movie, but it takes itself too seriously and loses its charm as it tries to weave somewhat boring scenes into a spiritual message.

For me, there are three distinct sections of this movie. The first section is where the “movie magic” happens. It is unconventional, and to some, the format of juxtaposing nature shots with narrative may be troubling. In my opinion, though, the beginning half of this movie is impeccably tailored. The scenes that do have actors lack dialogue and instead use narration. This gives the feel that the first half is prayer-like. We are inside the thoughts of these characters, and the editing with the nature shots give us a picture of the religious message the director is trying to convey. It reminds me a little bit of the long shots set to The Blue Danube Waltz in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.  The result of the editing in The Tree of Life is compelling, so much so that I got a little teary.”
